- Bishops Finger
Kentish
Ale takes its name from the ancient roadside signposts that pointed
pilgrims the way to St Thomas à Becket's shrine in Canterbury
- Both Spitfire
Premium Kentish Ale and Bishops Finger Kentish Strong Ale are registered
with the European Commission as Protected Geographical Indicators
(PGIs) - similar to France's appellation contrôlée system
for indicating quality wine - signifying they are brewed from local
ingredients using traditional methods.
- Shepherd Neame
was the first brewery in the UK to be awarded the ISO14001 accreditation
- the international standard supporting environmental management techniques.
We therefore claim to be Britain's first 'Green' brewery!
- Only barley
grown
in the UK is malted and used to brew Shepherd Neame beers - 6,000
tonnes, harvested from 2,500 acres of barley, are used every year
(2,500 acres of barley would cover 945 football pitches).
- We currently
employ
a team of seven qualified brewers, with a total of 160 years brewing
experience, to ensure all beers are brewed to the highest quality.
- Shepherd Neame
has won
medals at the last seven international brewing awards for draught
and bottled ales and lagers.
- Hops used
in our beers and
lagers are Kentish, and grown within 25 miles of the brewery. The
exception is Whitstable Bay Organic Ale, which uses organically grown
New Zealand Gem and Hallertau hops as we couldn't buy any organic
hops in Kent.
- Whitstable
Bay Organic Ale
is approved by the Soil Association, the leading organic authority
which confirms use of organic raw materials and brewing processes.
- One of our large
fermenting vessels holds enough beer to supply the average drinker
for a lifetime (lucky person!).
- Holsten Export
is brewed at Shepherd Neame under the Reinheitsgebot Bavarian Beer
Purity Law of 1516.
- The water
used to brew our beers is drawn from the original artesian source
beneath the brewery. We use 44 million gallons of well water (the
equivalent of 72 Olympic swimming pools) to produce 60 million pints
per year.
